Westport

In the South Island’s West Coast region in New Zealand, Westport lies close to the foreland of Cape Foulwind at the Buller River. According to some, Westport has received its name from Connacht’s Westport in Ireland. Others believe Westport is so called because of its location.

The European immigrants arrived in Westport in 1861 and gold mining was their main occupation. In 1884, the first vessel that reached this township was Three Brothers. Later, several surveyors and geologists visited this place in search of valuable resources. Thomas Brunner, Charles Heaphy and William Fox are some of them. Further, in few years, the town became popular for coal mining, which is still a dominant area here. Today, this thriving town has a population of about 7000.

Sightseeing in and around Westport

Coaltown Museum
Visit this site to know about the history of coal mining in Westport. Here, you will be able to explore an extensive photo gallery of uranium and sound effects that occur in underground mines. You can also take a helicopter tour for mineral exploration.

Karamea
For an experience of touring across the unbeaten track, you can go to Karamea. It is nestled in the South Island’s northwest area. While you explore this beautiful site, be ready to catch the fascinating glimpses of Wangapeka, Heaphy and Leslie tracks. Limestone arches and Honeycomb Hill Caves in Oparara Valley will be other magnificent sights. You can walk across the lush bush and estuary for more fun.

Beaches
About 5 km from Westport, you will come across mesmerizing Carter's Beach. This beach is located on the way to Cape Foulwind. It’s a perfect place for surfing and other watersports. With family, you can go to North Beach. This is a beautiful beach with plenty of fun activities.

Oparara Valley
Oparara Valley sprawls across a lush rainforest with three entrancing limestone arches carved out by the Oparara River and underground caves. Your attention will gradually shift towards the streams laced with verdant bush, which makes for an interesting view.

Cape Foulwind Hike
This hiking trail is very popular in Westport. Commencing from Westport, the hike continues through the coast to the seal colony. On this tour, you will get to witness fog and wind. The hiking will last for about ½ hour.

Recreation in Westport

Westport is a perfect holiday destination for any adventure enthusiast as well as fun loving tourist. Here, you can venture out on cave tour to explore the galaxies or grottos of Glowworm. Take wilderness or scenic tours and explore the enchanting plateau. Whitewater rafting, surfing, biking, jetboating and horse trekking are some of the other activities that are worth trying here.

How to reach Westport

You can reach Westport via road from Nelson, Christchurch or Greymouth. If you are coming from Christchurch or Nelson, follow State Highway 6 route, winding through Inangahua Junction and the Buller Gorge. In case, you are traveling from Greymouth, you have to opt for State Highway 6 route by the coast through Punakaiki and the junction.
