Wanaka

Wanaka History

Nathaniel Chalmers was the first European in Wanaka guided by Chief Reko in 1853. This region is Rich with Hisorical and cultural evidence of Maori.Theodore Russell opened the first Hotel in 1867 and hence Tourism in Wanaka commenced. Earlier known as Pembroke was renamed to Wanaka in 1940.

Wanaka Climate

Continental type of climate dominates Wanaka. Spring happens to be the wettest season. During this season, the weather is rather dry. The region receives an annual rainfall of about 682 millimeter. Summers are hot and dry. Temperature may rise up to 30 degree Celsius. Winter sees clear and peaceful days. During the winters the temperature may drop up to 10 degree Celsius.

Wanaka - Geographical Features:

Wanaka is a beautiful landscape engulfed between mountains from all the sides. Towards the north, near Makarora, Haast Pass cuts through the Southern Alps. Towns of Omarama and Twizel lie to the northeast of Queenstown. In close proximity to Lake Wanaka runs Lake Hawea. Other than the mighty Southern Alps, Glendu Bay motorpark lies at the south of the town. The nearby Matukituki River valley serves as a doorway to the Mount Aspiring National Park
