Maruia Falls

Originating from the Spenser Mountains on the South Island of New Zealand, Maruia Falls is a stunning ten meter long fall into an extremely serene and calm Maruia River. The enigmatic rapid fall is the main tourist attraction of this area. These falls are a result of Murchison Earthquake which took place in 1929 with a magnitude of 7.8 Richter scale. 80 kilometers long Maruia River tranquilly flows before fusing with a larger river to pave its way into the beautiful Maruia Falls. This ramble makes way for some brilliant scenic landscapes that are truly a treat to the eyes of the people walking by and tourists alike.

Maruia Falls – Location:

The Maruia Falls are to be found just about 15 kilometers south of State Highway 6 and the Buller River. It is situated 22 km south of Murchison in the Westport region. Maruia River is a key tributary of the Buller River.

The area experiences mildest climates in New Zealand. Sunshine dominates all round the year. Though it does not rain on a daily basis on average the region gets about 2000 mm of rainfall annually.
