Kaikoura

Kaikoura, the picture-perfect small coastal community, is located on the eastern South Island in New Zealand. It is situated at State Highway 1 at a distance of about 180 km of Christchurch. The Maori name ‘Kaikoura’ is composed of two words such as kai meaning ‘eat’ and koura ‘crayfish'. Many tourists come to this place for tasty seafood, especially crayfish or rock lobster. Visitors prefer holidaying in Kaikoura for relaxation and fun.

There is, however, something more about Kaikoura than seafood and scenery. The town offers exciting sightseeing and adventure opportunities. Some of the best ones are listed below.

Kaikoura Trivia

With a population of about 3900 residents, Kaikoura town enjoys an interesting historical background. The town was settled by the Maori immigrants before Europeans came to New Zealand. They started farming the coastal plains to produce kumera (sweet potato). Some opine that Kaikoura peninsula was founded by Captain Cook in 1770.

Sightseeing in and around Kaikoura

Kaikoura District Museum
Run by Kaikoura Historical Society, the museum is located on 14 Ludstone Road. It is the perfect place to know about the colorful history of the Kaikoura district. Museum’s exhibits include Plesiosaur bones, farming and fishing equipment and Mäori artifacts. You can also see an extensive collection of photographs of different places and people here. Minute books and records of various organizations are also available in the museum.

Fyffe House
Fyffe House is one of the oldest buildings in the town. It stands witness to the transformation of Kaikoura from a whaling station and farming and fishing town to port and whale watching centre. From here, you can explore the magnificent vistas of the sea and Seaward Kaikoura mountains.

Memorial Hall
Beside the Council Office, on the Esplanade, the Memorial Hall has been renovated to enhance its beauty. It features contemporary kitchen, bar, changing rooms and toilets. The accommodation capacity of this hall is up to 350 guests for any function. Every year, the hall hosts the popular Kaikoura Trash Fashion Show and Royal New Zealand Ballet. There is a Supper Room in this hall. It can be used for meetings or presentation ceremonies of up to 90 people.

South Bay Marina
On the southern Kaikoura peninsula, there is a South Bay Marina. It features a slipway, seawell, public toilets, bus/ boat/ car/ trailer parking and washdown area for boats along with fuel facility. It is the main cruising point for tour operators like Dolphin Encounter and Whale Watch Kaikoura.

North Wharf
On the northern peninsula, the North Wharf is cozily tucked at Wakatu Quay. This newly built concrete structure receives many cruise ships and offer tender boats to the passengers.

Old Wharf
Recognized as the historic icon of Kaikoura, the Old Wharf was once used by the fishing industry of the town. From here, whaling operations were carried out. Today, this place is largely visited for fishing activities. You can spot numerous recreational fishing boats here. The wharf is situated at Fyffe Quay.

District Library
The library is cuddled in the center of the West End, facing the Visitor Information Centre. Its quiet and peaceful atmosphere attracts both locals and tourists. Here, you can browse through a vast repository of fiction and non-fiction books of all times. In case, you don’t find your desired copy here, simply place an order. The library will get it for you. Toy library, children program and puzzles are the other highlights of this library.

Lions Pool
This heated outdoor swimming pool facility is an amazing attraction in Kaikoura. On the foreshore, this heated pool is run by the Tasman Regional Sports Trust. The main highlight of this recreational spot is swimming programs, barbeques and swimming clubs. This pool operates from November to March.

How to reach Kaikoura

You can reach Kaikoura from Picton and Christchurch with ease, availing bus, car or shuttle services. You can also opt for scenic train journey from Christchuch to come to this coastal town. There is a small airport in this town called Kaikoura Airport. If you prefer an air travel, catch a flight to this destination.
