Hanmer Springs

Hanmer Springs is a breathtaking tiny town in the South Island’s Canterbury region in New Zealand. It is located about 65 kms from Kaikoura in Hurunui and 9 kms from State Highway 7. Hanmer Springs Trivia

In 2009, when an extension proposal was made for Hanmer Springs’ hot pools complex, Queen Mary Reserve Trust among others stood against it. But after a hearing from Robert Batty, the independent Commissioner, the proposal was given a green signal. Construction of freshwater pool, water slides and ice skating rink among other facilities was proposed.

Thermal Pools and Spa
Amid the natural surroundings of mountains and forests, Hanmer Springs thermal pools and spa offer guests a perfect setting for relaxation and fun. There are about 12 open air pools with 33 - 42 degrees Celsius temperature. The thermal pools and spa have won several New Zealand Tourism Awards along with the Distinction Award. Recently, excellent waterslides and family activity pool have been built to attract more tourist attention.

You can visit the pools and spa to recover from a prolonged ailment or to simply enjoy your time. The thermal waters consisting of various minerals such as sodium chloride, calcium, sulphur, carbonates, potassium and magnesium among others are truly soothing. You can choose between Rock Pools, Sulphur Pools, Hexagonal Pools and Rainbow Pool for a refreshing experience. In addition, you can explore sauna and steam rooms, Gardenhouse Café and picnic area. Some private thermal pools are also available here.

Hanmer Forest Park
At the height of 385 metres, the Hanmer Forest is best known for its collection of exotic and native plantings. This forest is run by DOC. It offers excellent opportunities for cycling and walking. Those who love hunting can take prior permission from the Department of Conservation and chase chamois, red deer and pig. For a spectacular countryside view, you can take walking tours of the Jacks and Jollies Passes. The tour will last for 3 – 5 hours. From short walks to tramping trails, the forest has it all for you to explore.

Wai ariki Farm Park, Cafe & Gallery
One of the cool Hanmer Springs attractions, Wai ariki Farm Park is a perfect holiday destination for families and groups of any age. Surrounded by the majestic mountain views, the park showcases 2 acres of sheltered area for animals. You can feed these animals with your hands. For some refreshments, you can simply walk to its café.

You can reach Hanmer Springs from Christchurch by bus. Blenheim, Picton and Marlborough also give easy access to this town.
