An unusual nugget, Haast, lets you explore various New Zealand's unique scenery and wildlife. Right at the heart of the ancient rainforests of Te Wahipounamu, Haast is situated amid rugged surroundings of the South West New Zealand World Heritage area, glaciers, and the Tasman Sea.

Historic Trivia:

The origin of European settlement in Haast dates back to the 1870s. Very recently, during the 1960s, roads were constructed to connect Haast to the rest of New Zealand. Previously, Haast was accessed via rough tracks and ships.

Haast Location:

Towards the West Coast, Haast spreads over 2,500 square kilometers of spectacular countryside. It consists of Haast Township, Haast Beach and Haast Junction.

Melodious bird songs and splendid wildlife keep the Haast's native bush lively. It’s a house to tui, bellbird, grey warbler, fantail, wood pigeon, silvereye, parakeet, kaka, native falcon, morepork, Blue penguins, fur seals, dolphins Red Deer and possum.

Haast –Interesting facts:

  • Very recently, two native Kiwi birds were discovered near Haast when they were on the verge of extinction. Haast plays a vital role as a part of the Department of Conservation's Kiwi Sanctuary project.
  • In 1990 Haast gained global recognition as a place possessing important natural value. Thereafter it became an important pride and joy of Te Wahipounamu, The South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.
