It is believed that prior to European settlers, a Maori chief called Whatonga settled in the Wellington region. This place was earlier known as ‘Te Whanga-Nui-a-Tara’. Later, Colonel William Wakefield came here to purchase land from the Maori settlers so that two European colonies could be built. On January 22, 1940, Europeans settled in this region. And by 1865, Wellington became an administrative seat of the New Zealand government.

Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, derived its name from the first Duke of Wellington called Arthur Wellesley. He was the British Prime Minister from 1828 to 1830.

Wellington is referred to as ‘the Windy City.’ During winter, city’s daytime temperature hovers around 8°C. Summertime temperature is mostly registered at 25°C. However, in the inland valleys, temperature falls to 10°C causing frost and snowfall in the mountain ranges.
