Taupo

Taupo – Location:

Taupo is a township situated on the banks of Lake Taupo. It lies right in the center of North Island at the Central Plateau in the southern Waikato Region.

Taupo – History:

Maori translation of Taupo is “Taupō-nui-a-Tia” which means “The great cloak of Tia". Tia is the name of the person who discovered the lake.

Primarily a resort town, tourism is the main occupation which rules the region.

Taupo – Climate:

Taupo has a temperate climate. However, the weather here is generally windy and cold. Temperature during the summers range between 10°C to 25° C whereas during the winters it ranges between -3 °C to 12 °C.

Orakei Korako is an excellent zone for relaxed strolls. It lies between Taupo and Rotorua is popular among the natives and tourists alike for its silica terraces, geysers, boiling mud pools and hot springs. Its Ruatapu Cave is a stupendous natural cave which comprises a small jade-green lake. According to an ancient story, it is believed that early Maoris used the water as a mirror during various ceremonies, in involved hair dressing as a ritual.

Taupo Airport, served by the Air New Zealand, is situated towards south of the township. The airport offers direct flights to Auckland and Wellington.
