Rotorua, literally translated as “The second great lake of Kahumatamomoe” in Maori pompously sits in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island towards the southern coast of the lake of Kahumatamomoe or the Rotorua Lake in the Bay of Plenty area.

  • 80 kilometer north of Taupo

Rotorua enjoys a temperate type of weather. During the summers the daily maximum temperatures ranges from 20 C to 27 C. On the other hand during the winters the temperature is around 10 C to 12 C.

Rotorua History:

Rotorua boasts of a rich Māori culture which has strong roots on several local legends and cultural history of the region.

Also known as the ‘Second lake', Kahumatamomoe is believed to the uncle of the Maori chief Ihenga. Ihenga is the ancestral explorer of the Te Arawa which was the second major lake of the area. He dedicated it to his uncle.

Inhabitant of Whakarewarewa, an active Māori geothermal setting, even today use natural resources for cooking, washing and bathing. Te Puia is another important Maori culture centre which proffers an insight into the traditional art forms, carving and weaving experience of the region.

By car

Rotorua is a 3-hour drive south from Auckland. You can take on any one of the following three routes to the City.

  • via Hamilton
  • via Matamata
  • via Matamata route which is comparatively less busy

By bus

Intercity Coach and Naked Bus run around the city which provides bus services which drives the tourists to the tourist information centre on Fenton Street.
