Napier Trivia

In 1931, Napier was hit by earthquake and subsequently, by fire. This resulted in the destruction of its downtown business region. Later, this area was rebuilt in Art Deco style and the waste rubbles were disposed near the eastern foreshore. These rubbles were used to develop gardens and recreational reserve in the area.

Further, the surrounding land got elevated because of earthquake. Onekawa and Pandora’s low-lying industrial area, the airport, and Tamatea and Pirimai’s suburbs were earlier an estuary. Some streets are still called by the names they had when they were the coastal areas. Today, in Taradale Township, one can see some of the ancient most popular regional wineries that hold concerts in summertime.
