Auckland was at first settled by Maori's in the 1350s. However as Europeans came in Maori’s left the area. Later in February of 1840 Auckland was resettled by the Governor of New Zealand and was declared as a Capital City. Though later in 1865 it lost its capital status to Wellington it continued to grow.
