
Established in 1956, Nelson Lakes National Park is located towards the North of New Zealand's South Island. Covered over an area of 102,000 Hectares or 1,020 Square Kms. it boasts of its Luscious Beech forest, Rugged Peaks, Crystal Clear Lakes & Streams. This reserves comes with plenty options such as short tracks to explore the enigmatic forests and beautiful Glaciers & Lakes.
St Arnaud, a village close to the park, serves as the main gateway to the park. It is situated at 1 to 2 hour distance from Nelson or Blenheim. The place is pretty comfortable for visitors.
As per Maori mythology, Nelson lakes were created by the great chief Rakaihaitu. It is believed he dug holes in the ground with his "ko" or digging stick. Of which one formed Lake Rotoiti or small waters while the other grew to be Lake Rotoroa or large waters.
