Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park is spread over an area of 70,696 Hectares. Its magnificence has helped it in gaining an identity for itself. Today the mount celebrated as New Zealand's significant and most visited alpine park.

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park Location

The park is situated right at the core of South Island, deep within the heart of the Southern Alps. This makes the park easily accessible. State Highway 80 takes you directly to Aoraki / Mount Cook Village. Lake Pukaki located right beside the village makes an excellent zone for alpine activities.

In order to enshrine the beautiful landscape and the valuable flora and fauna of the region, the area came under New Zealand's Department of Conservation's direct supervision. It was established as a national park in the year 1953.

Brief History Of Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park

A particular legend states that Aoraki was the son Rakinui, the Sky Father and had three brothers. Once, the three brothers went on a sea voyage. Unfortunately, their canoe overturned on a reef. To protect themselves they climbed on top of their canoe. To protect themselves, they climbed on top of their canoe. It is believed that the freezing south wind transformed them into stone. On the other hand their canoe turned out to be South Island also known as "Te Waka o Aoraki". While Aoraki and his two brothers turned into the peaks of the Southern Alps.

Weather out here is Usually Moderate and Pleasant. Summers are generally hot while winters happen to be extremely cold. During the winters, landslides may take place in case of Heavy Snowfalls.
