
Situated at Northlands Kauri Coast, Waipoua Kauri Forest is an abode to magnificent natural beauty. The greatest sub-tropical rainforest of New Zealand boasts of its mightiest and oldest kauri trees. The Forest is stretched over an area of 15,000 ha of which 2639 ha consist of Mature Kauri trees.

Earlier, Kauri Forest was a fire lookout. As the name of the park suggests, it is home to innumerable huge kauris. Some of these trees are about 2000 Years Old. As you walk past the region, you are bound to admire its spectacular view.
A garden of Tane Mahuta today, lost much of its ancient forest cover due to fire and plunder. To protect the remaining heritage, the forest was brought under the control of the DOC. Forests also provides routes if you wish to explore deep inside the forest.
Kauri forest has abundant species of other plants like Taraie, Kohekohe, Kowhai and Northern Rata. High intense Kauri Grass and Gahnia like Mairehau, Hangehange, Neinei, Kiekie and Ferns are found beneath the huge kauri trees.
Forest is a safe place for various endangered species. To name a few - Kukupa, Kokako, Brown Kiwi, Native Parrots, Kakariki and Kaka. Other types found are - Fantail, Pied Tit, Tui, Grey Warbler, Shining Cuckoo, Kauri Snail and Kingfisher.
