Westland National Park New Zealand

The Westland National Park New Zealand stretches from the glaciers that climb down the Southern Alps, some 3000 m in height, to the temperate rainforests that span the length of remote beaches on the West Coast flanked by the Tasman Sea. With nearly 60 glaciers spread in every direction, it is not hard to imagine why Westland National Park is such a frequented holiday destination.

The Legend of Westland National Park New Zealand

The origin of glaciers in Westland National Park can be attributed to ice age or according to the Maori legend, to the avalanche girl, Hinehukatere. It is believed that this girl was in love with the mountains and with a boy named Tawe. Together they would climb the peaks and revel in the rarified air. One day however, tragedy struck and the boy slipped to his death. The many glaciers that dot the landscape of Westland National Park are nothing but the pool of tears that the Avalanche girl shed at her loss.

Tourist Attractions in Westland National Park New Zealand

Of the 60 glaciers that dot the highlands of Westland National Park, two are the most frequented viz. Fox and Franz Josef. These fast moving glaciers (4 m each day) descend from the snowfields in the Southern Alps creating thunderous sounds as they move past the valleys into the dense temperate rainforests. The valleys and temperate rainforest along the West Coast complete the package of tourist attractions, offered by Tours to New Zealand, courtesy Westland National Park.
